I’m obsessed with ephemera and vintage props, so I decided to undertake a personal project based on one of my favourite ghost stories, ‘Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad,’ by M. R. James. Published in 1904, the story features a skeptical Cambridge academic whose entire world view is shaken by a supernatural experience. It takes place in a small seaside town in Suffolk, so a postcard was a necessity!

I dreamed up a spooky scene for the front of the card in Photoshop, and then had great fun researching real postcards from 1904, focusing on their typography and fonts, postmarks, and general style. I even found a few from the real town (Felixstowe) the fictional Burnstow is based on.
